About Us

LOCSU was established in 2007 to provide support for Local Optical Committee (LOCs). Our parent organisations are the Association of Optometrists (AOP), the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians (FODO) and the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO).

LOCSU works to a set of principles which are the foundation of our decision making and strategic focus:

  • LOCs are local experts in eye health and the eye health pathway must engage with LOCs to ensure this expertise is best put to use
  • Far more patients can be seen in the community than is presently the case
  • PECs are the best model for the delivery of extended primary eyecare
  • Community practice must be better valued
  • Collaboration across the optical sector is essential
  • Optics must position itself for the future
  • Good governance is vital

LOCSU is a non-profit membership organisation. All LOCs in England are members of LOCSU and fund our work by paying a levy. Full details of our levy income and expenditure are available in our Annual Report.

LOCSU consists of a small head office team, alongside a network of Optical Leads providing local support to LOCs across the country. LOCSU also retains a small expert group of clinical experts and advisers.
