Since the new commissioning landscape was introduced in April 2013, the LOC Company model is now well
established as an effective model for LOCs, for Commissioners, for optical practices and ultimately, for patients. It
particularly provides the opportunity for independent practitioners to participate in contracts where Commissioners
insist on a single provider model. Primary Eyecare Companies have proven to be highly popular with Commissioners
who want to maximise choice and access to community services for patients, but who don’t want the burden of
contracting individually with numerous practices. Contractors, meanwhile, are finding that the single provider model
reduces the administrative burden, streamlines compliance, simplifies payments and allows optical professionals to
concentrate on the clinical day job. The activity map below illustrates its growing use and success.
