Since returning to work in the new year the LOCSU team has been inundated with correspondence from LOC and ROC representatives looking for support in developing eyecare services in their area. Such is the dedication of our colleagues who are battling to get eye health on the local agenda that even on a Friday evening I have received email requests in the last hour for advice from four different LOCs. That’s impressive!
A key objective for LOCSU is to increase the role of community optometrists and opticians in providing primary eyecare services, and getting eye health on the agenda of every local commissioner is crucial to achieve our aims. Great things are being achieved in various places across the country with some commissioners now having such confidence in what can be provided by community optical practices that they are asking ‘What else can you do for us?’.
The majority of LOCs and ROCs are very aware of the support that LOCSU can provide to enable them to drive the local eye health agenda, from helping with business cases to providing model service specifications. However, every now and again, I come across someone working on service development in their local area that isn’t aware of the hands on support that is available to them. If you have an opportunity to work with commissioners I urge you to contact us and take advantage of the support and the tools available to you.
Let’s get all local commissioners focussing on eye health in 2012.
