LOCSU launches new expert-accredited coaching and mentoring programme

26 January 2015

LOCSU is to launch a new, expert-accredited coaching and mentoring programme for the optical sector “to pass down knowledge and skills”.

The scheme, aimed primarily at LOC Chairs and LOC Company Clinical Governance and Performance Leads, is designed to offer current leaders new skills and the opportunity for experienced leaders to pass down existing skills.

Launching the new coaching programme, Gill Brabner, LOCSU Learning and Development Consultant, said: “There is no better type of learning than from someone who knows the ropes and is in a position to pass those skills on to those starting out on the leadership ladder. That insight is gold dust.

“LOC officers and Clinical Leads already perform important roles leading the sector and maintaining the governance of services; this programme will help them develop personally and professionally,” explained the LOCSU Consultant.

“It is vitally important for the sector that we use coaching and mentoring as a way of retaining the wealth of experience, skills and expertise built up by individuals working as leaders and allow the next generation of leaders the opportunity to inherit that body of knowledge,” she said.

“It’s also a useful succession planning exercise for the sector as a whole.”

The six-month course, accredited by the UK’s largest management body, the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), consists of online modules with two contact days. It leads to a Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.

The ILM works with organisations in all sectors to help them embed and develop their leadership and management capability they need to succeed and to influence policy-makers and opinion-formers.

The course, which is fully funded by LOCSU, will run twice a year with start dates in May and November 2015. Depending on uptake, there may be scope for non-LOC officer participants who can demonstrate how their activities and skills will benefit the sector. LOCSU will meet the costs for the course and the qualification but delegates will be expected to meet their own costs to attend both contact days.

If you are interested in participating or want more information, email info@locsu.co.uk and identify your preferred starting date. For more information about LOCSU’s learning and development programme, visit www.locsu.co.uk/training-and-development/.
