Information for pre-reg optometrists applying to NHS England's Performers List

10 May 2017

LOCSU and the Optical Confederation are awaiting clarification from NHS England and PCSE on some changes that will streamline the Performers List application process and minimise delays.

This will include the opportunity to have the required face-to-face document verification meeting alongside the College pre-reg OSCEs in July.

The NPL1 is the form that must be used to apply to join the Performers List. Guidance for pre-registration optometrists on how to complete and submit the NPL1 form will be available towards the end of May.

In the meantime, you should be prepared by following the steps below:

  1. Apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate ASAP
  2. Register with the DBS online update service when you receive your certificate
  3. Apply for a police check if you have been resident in the UK for less than 5 years
  4. Subscribe to LOCSU e-alerts

1. Apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate ASAP

All applicants to the NHS Performers List must provide a satisfactory enhanced DBS certificate. Pre-reg optometrists are advised to apply for an enhanced DBS certificate as soon as possible as this can take at least 6 weeks to be processed.

You are advised to check with your employer in the first instance as some employers provide a service that employees can access to obtain a DBS check.

AOP members can obtain a DBS check via Complete Background Screening Ltd. Call 01443 799900 or email info@cbscreening.co.uk, quoting the Association of Optometrists and your AOP membership number.

2. Register with the DBS online update service when you receive your certificate

You are advised to register for the DBS online update service https://www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service as soon as you receive your DBS certificate. If you do not register for the service within 19 days of receipt of the certificate it will become invalid and you will need to apply for a new certificate. Keep your certificate safe!

The above steps are essential as your application will not be approved without an enhanced DBS certificate that is registered with the online update service.

3. Apply for a police check if you have been resident in the UK for less than 5 years

If you have lived outside of the UK within the past 5 years, you will need to obtain a police check for all countries you have been resident in your absence from the UK. You are advised to request this as soon as possible as a police check can take a number of weeks to come through depending on the country.

Information on how to apply for a police check can normally be found on the website of a country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
