Briefing document on the implications of NICE Glaucoma Guideline (NG 81)

28 November 2017

LOCSU has produced a briefing document on the implications of the recent NICE Glaucoma Guideline (NG 81) for locally commissioned Glaucoma Repeat Readings and Referral Refinement services in England.

Key points and Actions for Local Optical Committees (LOCs) and Primary Eyecare Companies (PECs) sets out the steps for LOCs and PECs to take if there is a Repeat Measures service in place and includes a template letter to be sent to commissioners to explain the changes that are required to the referral pathway. This includes highlighting the increase in the threshold for IOP referrals to 24mmHg.

The LOCSU update also explains the repercussions of the new guidance for areas that do not have a repeat measures scheme and provides a template letter for LOCs in those areas to send to their CCGs to request a meeting to discuss the commissioning of appropriate services to ensure that local commissioning arrangements are compliant with NICE guidelines.

Commenting on the new briefing, Clinical Director Katrina Venerus said “It is important that we ensure Primary Eyecare Companies responsible for the delivery of current services understand the implications the new NICE guidance have on their local pathway(s) and that we support them to work with commissioners to implement the necessary changes”.  Venerus added “Equally, we need to ensure that the 35% of CCGs who have yet to commission a repeat readings service understand that the recommendations NICE have made on case finding for primary eye care professionals are separate to a sight test, so there will continue to be an unnecessary high rate of false referrals in their area due to the lack of commissioning.”

LOCSU have also advised that the Glaucoma Repeat Readings and OHT Monitoring pathway is currently being updated to reflect the new NICE guidance and a revised version will be available early in the New Year.
