LOCs successfully weather the NHS storm with the support of LOCSU - LOCSU Annual Report 2011/2012

1 October 2012

Supporting Local Optical Committees (LOCs) through the storm of NHS changes in England and Regional Optical Committees and Optometry Wales in Wales has meant unprecedented levels of requests for advice from the Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) over the past year, according to LOCSU Chairman Alan Tinger.

Speaking as LOCSU’s Annual Report for 2011/12 was published, he went on to say:
“The NHS reforms in England have provided LOCs with tremendous opportunities to influence the new Clinical Commissioning Groups.   Many LOCs have been very successful and with LOCSU’s support, have used this time to turn plans on paper into real improvements in the way local eye health services are delivered as demonstrated in our annual report.  LOCs are increasingly recognising the value of LOCSU’s in-depth support, with nearly 400 enquiries received in one quarter alone.

“On a more strategic level, some of our efforts to raise the profile of the sector have borne fruit – with a number of firsts - from the first ever specialist leadership course for the optical sector to the first every atlas of optical variation which shows the success of LOCs in getting enhanced services off the ground.  We look forward to continuing this work in the forthcoming year.”

Don Grocott, Chairman of the Optical Confederation said:
“LOCSU is key to the success of the Optical Confederation and vice versa.  The Confederation warmly congratulates LOCSU on another successful year in delivering quality support for the Local Optical Committees it serves so well.   LOCSU provides a vital link between the excellent work being carried forward  at local level and the national agenda.  This has  raised  the profile of  eye health throughout the NHS, improving and expanding services in the community to  build a proud future for  the optical professions."
