Update on DVLA and LOCSU's Leadership course

Update on DVLA

The DVLA has written to current providers regarding a proposal to procure the visual fields testing service from a national company.  Some Local Optical Committees have raised whether LOCSU (and LOCs) should get involved with this proposal.

As you will appreciate, the DVLA contract is not an NHS contract and so in theory falls outside LOCSU’s remit.  However, even if LOCSU was able to bid for a national contract to sub-contract to local practices, it is likely that the administration cost make it impractical.

We can advise you that the Optical Confederation has written to the DVLA requesting more information on the aims of this particular tendering process and the sorts of delivery models that the DVLA envisages. The Optical Confederation needs to understand what sort of model would be welcomed by the DVLA and whether we should, as a sector, invest time and resource and support members in developing this.

Representatives from the Optical Confederation will attend the Suppliers’ Day in Swansea but have also requested a separate meeting with the DVLA, either in advance of or following this seminar to clarify how the Optical Confederation might assist engagement with the optical businesses that have expressed an interest.

As soon as there is any further news on this we will alert LOCs.
