Inductees present ‘Quick Wins’ to their LOCs following Induction Course

11 March 2021

18 new recruits have participated in our latest facilitated LOC Induction course.

The course is primarily for optometrists and dispensing opticians who are new to their LOC, but more experienced members who just want to refresh their knowledge are also very welcome. Course members work through resources on LOCSU’s new training platform #Thinkific which they have access to 24/7.

Additionally they take part in several webinars facilitated by our Digital Learning Support Officer, Simone Mason, along with other members of the LOCSU team including Chief Executive Officer, Richard Whittington, Head of Policy, Richard Knight and two of LOCSU’s Optical Leads – Amar Shah and Max Halford.

One of the Inductees, Lee from Cornwall LOC who has been on his LOC for 12 months, said the course had given him a good basic knowledge: “I can now go to my LOC, dive in and start building on what I now know.”

Following the course – Lee presented some ‘quick wins’ that should be on the agenda of Cornwall LOC.

  • Websites
  • Social media platforms
  • Share information storage area (Dropbox etc)

Sid from Gloucestershire LOC, was a bit late to the party, but soon caught up and said: “I will be able to make better informed contributions in meetings and project work.”

Course leader Simone Mason said:

“Feedback following the recent course has indicated that it has been an excellent learning opportunity for the new LOC members, and even if they have been involved in the committee for a while, they still gained a lot.

“The inductees showed high-quality reflections following the course and went away with an action plan of ‘quick wins’ for their LOC.

“Every course produces different outcomes and these inductees demonstrated an ambition to be more active in engaging with their local contractors and performers, by reviewing their website and different communication channels, in particular, social media. They will also set up a ‘buddy’ system to ensure they’re welcoming and supportive to new recruits.”

Training

Usually the course runs in June, but with the COVID-19 restrictions due to be lifted from 21 June, the next course will begin next month on Monday 19 April.

Dilara, from West Sussex LOC, another successful graduate of the recent course highly recommended taking part. She said: “I found it very informative and well worth doing.”

Any LOCs who have new members (or indeed more experienced members) who would benefit from the Induction course, please register asap with Jacque at LOCSU by emailing her at jacquefooks@locsu.co.uk
