PECs and LOCs

The large majority of LOCs fall under one of the Primary Eyecare Companies listed above. If you are unsure whether your LOC falls under one of the companies above, please contact your LOC officers.

While the LOC is responsible for commissioning discussions with NHS Commissioners for local services, the Primary Eyecare Company (PEC) is responsible for its contract delivery and administration. They act as the contracting vehicle of the LOC.

This provides accredited optical practices the ability to deliver a range of extended primary eye care services and for NHS commissioners to establish these under a single contract.

To operate effectively, PECs require a range of specialist skills including a Board of Directors to oversee clinical, finance and operational responsibilities. In particular, the Clinical Governance and Performance Lead (CGPL) role is responsible for the day-to-day running of the delivery of local services, including activity and performance reports to both the LOC and the Commissioner.

LOCSU offers training modules and mentoring opportunities for LOC members looking to be involved with their Primary Eyecare Company. (You will need to login to the members area to access this training.)
