LOCSU Annual Report 2012/13: High quality support for LOCs yields positive results for community eye health services

The range of expertise and advice now available from LOCSU means that LOCs have the support they need to make the most of the opportunities that have arisen out of the NHS reforms, according to Alan Tinger, Chairman of LOCSU.  Speaking, as LOCSU’s annual report; State of Community Eye Care Services in England 2013 was published, he went onto say:  
 
“The 2012/13 Annual Report published today is a chance to note LOCSU’s key achievements over the past year, including how our strategic decision to develop the LOCSU Company Model, ready for single provider commissioning, has really paid off over the past six months, evidenced by some of the LOC success stories we have showcased. The report also demonstrates the breadth and depth of training and support initiatives that LOCSU has developed to help LOCs make the most of changes in the NHS landscape over the past 12 months.  From the only Leadership Skills course for the sector; to critical advice from our Optical Leads; to guide LOCs through NHS tenders – our quest to provide the highest quality of support and expertise has benefited both LOCs and thus the state of community eye health services over the past year.  
 
“LOCSU is not complacent however and will continue to explore new ways of working, in order to build on the successful efforts of LOCs to develop more services so that patients wherever they live can access the full range of community eye health services provided by local optical practices.”  
 
Highlights of LOCSU’s annual report 2012/13) include: 
  • Details of how some LOCs have managed, with the support of LOCSU’s Optical Leads, to use the opportunities posed by the NHS reforms to develop more community eye health services
  • Facts and figures on the State of Community Eye Care Services in England 2013, which demonstrates the continual high level of demand for LOCSU support (more than 1,500 enquiries over the past 12 months) 
  • Information on the range of support provided by LOCSU for the benefit of LOCs and the optical sector over the past 12 months – including the only specialist Leadership Skills course for the sector.
