Careers in Optics Toolkit

2 December 2011

Could you be a keeper of a Careers in Optics Toolkit?

Background
You may have seen the colourful Careers in Optics materials at the recent NOC in Kenilworth.  The Careers in Optics working group is a cross-sector initiative established in 2010 to raise awareness of optics as a career choice in schools and sixth form colleges. It stimulates further interest in the profession and targets specific regions where recruitment challenges exist.

Members of the working group include representatives from the professional and optical bodies, employers and the universities.  The group have worked together to develop an innovative workshop which, following a pilot scheme, will now be delivered in schools across the UK. Using the principles of 3D as a springboard, students will learn about illusions, light and sight, in a fun, supportive and engaging environment.  They then watch a specially commissioned short 3D film which encourages them to think broadly about their future career options.

Training is available for optometrists and dispensing opticians who would like to volunteer to get involved in delivering this important initiative in schools. The training runs through all of the New Dimension materials and ensures the successful delivery of workshops. It demonstrates a schools workshop in action and provides an opportunity to speak to those involved in developing and delivering the pilot scheme.  It is also particularly useful to those with no prior experience of visiting schools or speaking to groups of young people.

How can you help?
The AOP and the College of Optometrists have agreed to place The Careers in Optics toolkits across the LOC network. We need to find a volunteer from each Committee who is willing to host and loan out a Toolkit from their practice to trained volunteers (‘Ambassadors’) visiting local schools.

We are now at the stage where we are arranging for boxes to be sent out. We would be very grateful if you could provide us with the nominated person and contact details by clicking on this link, and filling out our form. Once we have everyone’s contact details, we can arrange for the box to be sent and also provide instructions.

We look forward to receiving your details and will be in touch shortly.

Best wishes
Karen Sparrow and Annabel Tucker - On Behalf of the Careers in Optics Working Group
