Calling all eye health practitioners in South East London
Eye health practitioners from across South East London are being invited to take part in three glaucoma lecture sessions and a series of training workshops which have been funded as part of a NHS grant. This follows a successful bid for funding from NHS London by NHS South East London commissioners.   NHS South East London is working with two Local Optical Committees - Lewisham Southwark and Lambeth together with Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich – significant funding was received for the South East London QIPP Glaucoma Repeat Measures and Referral Project which aims to boost the numbers of practices and professionals taking part in glaucoma repeat measurements in these boroughs.  The local scheme in Bexley has been recently been assessed by NICE and published as a QIPP case study on NHS Evidence.
The aim of the training is to support practitioners who want to refresh and practice their skills in applanation tonometry and will also give people the chance to discuss referral refinement and referral thresholds relating to glaucoma.
Gordon Ilett from Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich Local Optical Committee said
“This training will give any optometrist or practice owner the chance to refresh their knowledge of glaucoma and get real insight from other clinicians on the benefits they have found to their professional development and in some cases for their business, in taking part in their local glaucoma repeat measures enhanced service.”

Notes to editors
NHS London has awarded the grant as part of their Continuing Professional and Personal Development funding.  The funding which has been awarded for a three month project  aims to improve the uptake of repeat measures schemes for glaucoma referral in areas where these schemes exist and in conjunction with commissioners will extend and integrate schemes in other boroughs within the South East London cluster.
The grant was awarded to NHS South East London who is working with Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Local Optical Committee and Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich Local Optical Committee.  Primary Eyecare BBG Ltd – the company set up by Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich Local Optical Committee  is arranging the events and co-ordinating  project in the boroughs.
