Atlas of Optical Variation

First ever map of community eye care services in England launched by LOCSU

The first ever map depicting community eye care services in England is encouraging testimony to the sheer hard work of Local Optical Committees (LOCs) over the past few years, according to Katrina Venerus, Director of Operations and Commissioning at LOCSU.

Speaking at the launch of the map – known as the Atlas of Optical Variation, which demonstrates which community eye care pathways are in place where, she went onto say:

“This map will be of great value to LOCs when making the case for additional pathways with local health commissioners.  For the first time, they will be able to demonstrate the success of other - often neighbouring areas - in the implementation of specific pathways.
“National policymakers will also have for the first time a ‘snapshot’ view of community eye care services in England – helpful for the Optical Confederation and LOCSU in demonstrating the success and value of community eye care.”

The Atlas of Optical Variation is available at and provides basic information on services in place.  It also provides basic contact information for LOCSU or individual LOC websites for other LOCs and commissioners who want to find out more.  LOCSU plans to develop a similar map which reflects the situation in Wales by the end of the year.
